Harsh truth: You alone are responsible for your emotional healing

Healthcare practitioners may support you, but no one else can truly heal you. A therapist's responsibility is to act ethically and competently toward his or her clients. It is up to them to be the best facilitator of change, but the burden of responsibility for the change falls on the client. It is the client who must perform his or her share of the therapeutic work. (Do your homework, collaborate, be honest with your therapist, provide feedback at check-ins etc)
Your therapist will help keeping you accountable but isn’t meant to direct your life, they want to be the support system that helps you make the choices necessary to manage symptoms and live healthier. With that, they will collaborate with you on ways to make your goal more attainable. They will talk to you about the benefits and potential risks associated with your goal, and help you see potential pitfalls and prepare for them.
However, the responsibility stays with you. This is also why therapy does not generally work when someone is sent by someone else (a spouse, parents etc) and they go along to appease that person but have no interest in doing the work on themselves. You need to want the change for it to occur.
